I was talking about earth hour to someone and asking them if they were going to do it. They said no I was like that doesnt seem right. But they raised a sort of funny point. what if more people do turn there lights off than everyone thinks. then what happens when everyone turns there lights back on, what could happen?
Had a trial soccer match on the weekend. I had one good moment where i shot at the goal and narrowly missed by the tinniest of margins, but other than that was an average game for me. Taking me a while to get my skill back. everything seems to be taking a while, to get back into the swing of things. i have forgotten how to write essays and stop a soccer ball. yes so we lost the game 4-0 which sounds worse than it was, plus the team was a division above us. anyway back to my very slow writing.
today is the 75th birthday of the sydney harbour bridge, it opened on this day in 1932. Yetsreday (sunday) they closed the whole bridge all day to traffic and let the public walk oer it to celebrate. I went along and it was great fun. Everyone was given a bright green hat to wear so when you looked at the masses of people all you saw was this green colour filling up all the lanes of the bridge. It was nice to actually look at the bridge and appreciate its grandness, usually you just speed over and can’t take it all in. there were people on the bridge who were there when it opened in 1932, so I wanted to go along and be part of history. I could do the 100 and 125 birthdays but 150 might be stretching it!
I read in the paper on the weekend that before 1914 no passports where required to travel. can you imagine that? It is really quite hard i think, especially today where passports not only come with your picture but also chips which may contain DNA and face recognition. It sounds delightful to imagine being able to travel without all the fuss and checks that are now necessary (especially if you are going through the USA). I guess it was only possible because before 1914 so many people could not afford to do much travel, except the very wealthy. But it also make me feel sad that I missed out on that sort of approach. Now everyone is so protective of their boundaries and who they let in and out.
Plus, in australia, our passports said Britain on the front covers until 1949! that’s only 58 years ago. Sometimes I get so annoyed at how conservative this country can be.
“Recent writings in human geography have claimed that practice of quantitative methods in the field is retreating as accounts of knowledge move away from metanarratives to more discursive practices where sociocultural meanings are seen to be paramount for understanding geographic phenomena.”
hmmmmm….just sat down to read this article and thats the first sentence. I think there is about 3 words that i have no idea what they mean. I can tell this is going to be one of those articles where english is not used, instead the writers decides to being annoyingly smart arsed and use the special thesaurus for top uni professors! ah its so frustrating because I am now going to have to keep ‘google:defining’ every second word and it will take ages to read. And I’m sure I wont understand, not that I care about quantitative methods and debates over it. Has nothing to do with aspirations on housing.
