the job of a dental assistant is an unknown. usually when i tell people that it is my part time job they don’t know what to make of it. People seem perpetually grossed out that I look down a mouth when everyone has one and it is essential part of us ?!?
The point however is to outline a normal day. It commonly involves alot of cleaning and endless repetition. Each day usually involves one weirdo or freak out patient. We had a elderly woman this morning ring and ask for one of our dentists who is on holidays. The emergency was that she had a dream, yes a dream, in which her son and this dentist were travelling. The train crashed and they both died. So she had to warn the dentist! it took about 10 mins on the phone to calm her down.
Another women thought her crown had come off, She came in and told us she chucked it away – a crown is worth over a $1000!!! So I am already thinking this is going to be good, But in reality she had sliced a bit off the side of her tooth and it just felt rough to her tongue.
Christmas day turned out to be lots of fun. Had some great food – turkey, roast potatoes and trifle with fresh fruit for dessert with all the fam. Have 2 younger cousin, 15 and 10 so we played some table tennis and got everyone out for a few games of round the world. Essentially play table tennis except once you hit the ball you put the bat down for the next person and join the queue at the other end of the table. When you miss the shot you are out so it ends up being a mad dash around the table to pick up the bat, hit the ball and keep running, while trying not to miss. Lots of fun and some good laughs.
Boxing day headed to Bronte to watch Sydney to Hobart race, was great seeing the boats file past the coast, buffering head on the big winds and stormy seas. such a nice day to watch some sailing, blue skies and sunny. Ended up being lovely holiday weather after cold and rain we had on the days before Christmas.
But essentially now back to work, and the boring grind that it is. doesnt it just suck when you have 2 great days and then have to go be responsible, adult like when all you want to do is call in sick so you can go to the beach. I think mostly its not the job, but just being stuck inside all day when it is lovely outside!!!
so this week has been busier which was great. Still very relaxing but headed to freshie on Monday which was so nice. had to go early as so hot I was worried about burning.
Tuesday saw me again at freshie, this time with Trish, however it was super windy!!! we drove over the headland to manly but all the parking there is 2 hours only. such a rip! drove around to Shelly beach as we thought that might be less windy, however not really. we got 2 random strangers to help us put our tent dome up and had a nice dip – water was fresh! then walked to manly for some New Zealand ice cream, yummy! they are forever changing the corso there which seems to defeat the purpose of it being a nice area when there is always construction going on.
My newest qualification is that i can serve alcohol responsibly. yep I sat through the 6 hour RSA course. Some boring parts although did pick up a few interesting facts – each standard drink had 10mg of alcohol in it. It takes approx 1 hour for your body to get 7.5mg of alcohol out of the blood stream.
this morning looked cooler so headed out for a bike ride with
good old dad. took me for like 3 hour ride all around the parramatta river – about 30k’s I think. as you can see I mapped out the route. The lovely hen and chicken bay makes for nice easy riding along the waterside. The killer is coming home through Putney from the Ryde bridge, about 3 big hills which just kill the thighs!

since this is my first full December and Christmas at home in 2 years have been getting into the spirit by decorating our house with Christmas lights. First the icicles lights went on the balcony, but that wasn’t bright enough. So we got a rope light to string under the eaves. and also put some lights on the inside of the downstairs window. We also have a painted Santa on our balcony and yesterday we put a clip light underneath so that at night you can see Santa waving at you.
I love christmas lights (if you hadnt already guessed). they are so much fun!
wow, just saw my last post was in august. so much has happened since then. flew to London for the European leg of my tour around the world.
London – was a very fun city. I had a blast seeing all the famous landmarks. And went to see Phantom of the Opera in Her Majesty’s Theatre. the show has been running there for 20 years! You know when Charles becomes King the theatre changes its name to His Majesty’s Theatre.
Worked my way up to Edinburgh – passing through Bath, oxford, York to name a few – for a 6 day Haggis tour of Scotland. The constant rain made the trip truly Scottish. There is nothing better than hiking in the rain for a hour and then arriving at a truly beautiful waterfall.
Flying on easyjet I got from Scotland to Paris for 50 pounds, and a sleepover in Luton airport – which has extremely uncomfortable chairs. Met my mum, after a 10 month absence it was a happy reunion at the airport. Paris for 4 days and Loire valley for 3 made a lovely week in France. Was sad to leave but Italy was calling. We spent about 3 days in each destination – Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Naples (Pompeii) and Rome. if you get the chance Cinque terre is amazing place to see. 5 villages located along stunning coast, surrounded by terraced vineyards. 3 days of summer weather in late October mad for great hiking and fresh swimming in the med.
I fare-welled Mum and headed to Athens via a one night stopover in Vienna – freezing cold. Athens was great, not too hot or crowded so much pleasanter than I had heard. I pretty much headed straight to Santorini, for a week of relaxation and fun on the beach. Arriving on the ferry you are left speechless at the stunning beauty of the place! Some ancient site hopping back on the mainland to Meteora and Olympos.
Turkey was my destination for the 12th and last month of travels. Joined a 17 day tour to see all the sights. Had an awesome group of people. Jumped into a hot air balloon in Capadoccia (central turkey) for great views as the sun rose, a great experience.
So that is about 3months of travel, sights and experiences condensed down. I am back home, arrived about 3 weeks ago now and sometimes hard to believe that I did all that. But I am so glad that I did. Taking a year away is the best thing anybody can do.
