Instead of the usual, ‘this is my first post, hello world’ comment I have decided to broach an interesting subject. Since moving to Canada as a seasonal worker I have taken on a variety of activties which normally would not cross my path. Firstly housekeeping, which is so crap that I will not delve into it here, except to say that only ever do it if you are desperate! However I have taken a job at Sunshine Village Ski Resort, where I work the front desk of the ski school. Pretty much have decided to start this blog as I need something to pass the time. Have people coming in all day but often periods of quiet where all there is to do is surf the net. So thats what i have begun to do.
But the topic of my post is my eyes have been opened to how much bludging goes on in the workplace. people are being paid to turn up, do certain hours, but often if you are in customer service, if there aren’t any people around there isnt a lot to do. I guess for me, growing up have always been told to do my best, not slack off, that sort of mantra, so I always feel wrong to not be working when i have been paid to. however i am happy to go with the flow, and this job at the moment is extremely cruisy!
[ Snow is precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes. Since it is composed of small rough particles it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure]
This is a fairly scientific and cold way of describing these amazing objects which are created out of thin air. Snow, which I have been surrounded by for the last few months evokes a number of different reactions in people.
- Working in a ski resort the production of snow is a business, so thats one side of why people like snow. It is profitable, especially when they pay staff $7/ hour and lessons start at minimum $100. Then you consider all the quipment people buy, jackets, thermals, snowbaords and skis – none of that is cheap.
- But I think for most people snow holds a magical position in their minds. That is certainly the case for me. When I think of the snow it always conjures up good memories, even though I have hurt myself more doing it than any other sport I have played. I think it is because this object falls out of the sky seemingly randomly, it doesn’t hurt or annoy like rain, it just silently covers everything in a cover of whiteness. so why wouldnt you like it !?!

If you are interested in snowflakes chcek out Guide to Snowflakes, which has some amazing pictures. I actually hadn’t realised that there were so many forms that a snowflake could take. They are all very pretty though, but crazy to imagine how many are needed to create enough snow to ride on.
